North Lanarkshire Fire

Firefighters helped a man suffering from smoke inhalation after flames broke out in the bedroom of a flat in a North Lanarkshire village shortly after 6pm on Tuesday (July 23).

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said: "We received a number of calls from members of the public reporting smoke coming from both the front and rear of a flat in New Stevenston.

"Two appliances were sent from Motherwell and a third was mobilised from Bellshill, with the crews informed that persons were suspected to be inside the property.

"Four firefighters enterred the building in full breathing apparatus in order to tackle the fire and conduct search and rescue operations.
"They quickly extinguished a small fire within a bedroom using a single high pressure water jet and all people were soon accounted for.

"Firefighters treated a man suffering from the effects of slight smoke inhalation until an ambulance arrived to assume responsibility for his care. He was then taken to Monklands Hospital."

Firefighters throughout Scotland regularly conduct free home fire safety visits as part of their duties, with crews eager to help prevent fires from starting in the first place.

The popular Free Home Fire Safety Visit programme is open to all residents, who can arrange for firefighters to visit by calling the SFRS freephone number: 0800 0731 999, texting “check” to 61611, or visiting the website.
