I am lost

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

Show ways of getting help in unsafe situations. HWB 0-42a.

1. Connecting the Learning - Read appropriate story e.g. Little Bear Lost (ISBN 978-0091764081) or any story about being lost.

2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes -

• I can say what to do if I get lost.
• I can explain who to talk to if I am lost.

3. Active Learning -

• Circle time – Have you ever been lost? Pass round the teddy, encourage children to say how it felt when they were lost and then when they were found. How can we make sure that we don’t get lost?
• Smartboard activity – drag characters into correct area – safer/or unsafe – police officer, mum, stranger, other child, shop assistant, teenager, security guard, school crossing patrol officer, group of children.

NB. Children should be made aware they should never go in to the back of a shop should they be asked to do so.

4. Demonstrating Understanding - Role play activity in small groups: one person is the child, one is the parent, a stranger and a shop assistant or a ‘safe person’. Re-enact a scene where you are lost, what do you do? Children can show their work to the rest of the class.

5. Review and Recall – True/False cards -Teacher reads out sentences about being lost and what to do and children hold up the appropriate card to show their understanding. E.g: Teacher – “If you are lost in a shop you should walk out of the shop and try and find your parent”, When you are in the shopping centre with your family you should try to stay together.

Ensure the children know some tips on how not to get lost: hold hands with your grown up, always make sure you can see your grown up and they can see you, don’t wander off etc.
