Dangers of Fire

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

I am learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others, and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. HWB 2-16a.

1. Connecting the Learning - Ask the class to think back to the fire escape plan activity and ask them to think of any reasons as to why their smoke alarm might go off. Explain that in the house there are many potential fire hazards but that most are preventable.

2.

Sharing the Learning Outcomes -

• I can use my knowledge of fire safety to identify situations that are unsafe in the home and may cause an accidental fire
• I can take responsibility for preventing some of these situations
• I can pass on my knowledge to younger siblings and older family members to help them make their homes safer

3. Active Learning – Use the resource to play the ‘Dangers of Fire’ activity. There are four rooms to investigate, consider dividing the class into four groups and give each group a different room.  The group should find the individual hazards and discuss how they could prevent them. Report back to the rest of the class on what they found.

4. Demonstrating Understanding –  Remind the class about the Learning Outcomes and ask them to give examples of how they could help e.g. reminding mum, dad, carer etc to put matches out of reach, or by telling gran to check her smoke alarm once a week. Record their answers.

5. Home Learning - Ask children to go home and discuss what they have learned with their families and write a list of actions that they can/have taken to make their home safer.

6. Review and Recall – Remind the class about the Learning Outcomes and ask them to think of things they could do to make their homes safer and reduce the risk of fire.
