Deliberate Fire Setting

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

Through contributing my views, time and talents, I play a part in bringing about positive change in my school and wider community. HWB 2-13a.

1. Connecting the Learning - Introduce the topic of deliberate fire setting by asking pupils to consider all the jobs that the Fire and Rescue Service do, for example: put out fires, attend road accidents, take part in water rescue incidents, help with flood situations. Explain that a Firefighters time is precious and therefore can’t be wasted. Explain that they are going to learn about the consequences of deliberately setting fires and how this has an impact on the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service resources.

2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes -

• I understand the importance of the Fire and Rescue Service
• I understand the strain on Fire and Rescue resources when fires are set deliberately
• I understand the impact that deliberate fire setting can have on my community

3. Active Learning - Use the interactive whiteboard to play the ‘Deliberate Fire Setting’ activity. Pupils should work in groups of three and four to decide which fire engine they should send to the fire, as the activity progresses more fires are started and pupils have to decide each time which fire engine to send.

4. Demonstrating Understanding -

a. Ask pupils to consider the consequences of setting a deliberate fire?
b. What would happen if it was reported that there was a person trapped in one of the fires?
c. Ask them what they think would happen if one of the fires grew in size and needed assistance form another fire station?
d. Why do you think people might deliberately set fires?

5. Review and Recall - As a class devise a script that highlights the dangers of deliberately setting a fire and the impact that this has on the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s resources. The class could be divided into a production team, actors, script writers, director etc. Consider filming the play and send it to the fire service to be displayed on the Go Safe Scotland website.
