Dangers of Fire

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

I am learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. HWB 1-16a.

1. Connecting the Learning - Discuss the fact that accidents can occur in the home but many are preventable. Explain that fire can be a hazard but steps can be taken to eliminate this.
2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes -

• I can look out for objects or situations that might cause a fire in the home.
• I can take responsibility to prevent a fire in the home.
3. Active Learning - Use the resource to play the ‘Dangers of Fire game’. Children and young people work in pairs or individually to look at the pictures and decide which option is safer. The next questions are:

• How could that be dangerous?
• What might happen?
• How could it be made safer?

Look at a couple of the hazard pictures again and discuss them with the class for example who might have left the matches on the couch.
4. Demonstrating Understanding - Divide the class into groups of 3’s or 4’s and within each group ask the children to take on the role of a family member to cover all age ranges – parent/carer, gran, baby, child etc.

Using the hazard cards from the Teachers Note, give one to each group, ask them to discuss which family member could be responsible for preventing that hazard. Repeat by swapping the cards among the groups. When time is up ask each group to report back to the class on their current card,

e.g. ‘My group’s card is a picture of a box of matches on a couch. An adult (mum, etc) should put it out of reach.’

The rest of the class should be given the opportunity to challenge this or agree. Children themselves can take some responsibility for certain hazards, for example, keeping their room tidy so they have a clear route to exit.
5. Home Learning – Ask children to go home and identify any of the hazards that have been discussed. They could report back to the class or take photographic evidence; equally they could share any good examples in their house.
6. Review and Recall – Remind the class about the Learning Outcomes and ask them to give examples of how they could help e.g. reminding mum, dad, carer etc. to put matches out of reach, or by telling gran to check her smoke alarm once a week.
