1. Connecting the Learning - Have a ‘Think, Pair and Share’ session to collect the children’s ideas on ‘What is Vandalism?’ (One definition is – The deliberate destroying or spoiling of property.) Display the collection of ideas and explain that in this lesson the class are going to look at the consequences of vandalism and how it might affect them, their parents and other members of the community.
2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes -

• I can describe how vandalism creates hazards for everyone in the community
3. Active Learning - Are there any examples of vandalism in the local area? Ask the class for examples and how it makes them feel. 

Use the online resource to play ‘What are the consequences?’ The example shows a ‘flow chart’ of the consequences of a school window being smashed. Discuss how the vandalism affected the people in the example.

Next ask the children to work in pairs to create their own ‘vandalism story’ using the flow chart idea. The website has a blank flow chart that the children can type into or it can be printed off as a writing frame. Ask each pair to choose an example of vandalism (e.g. smashed bus shelter, broken swing in play park, broken equipment in a school etc.)  as a starting point then create a set of consequences, thinking about how this might affect different people. They can invent fictional characters of all ages.
4. Demonstrating Understanding - Have a short role play session with the class in groups of 3 or 4, using the vandalism scenario cards as a stimulus (which can be downloaded and printed from the Teachers’ Area.) The children are given details about a situation involving vandalism and ideas for different characters they can play, showing their reactions.
5. Review and Recall - Remind the class about the Learning Outcome and ask for a few examples of how vandalism affects people in the community.
6. Homework task - Ask the class to look out for any news items involving vandalism and bring in articles from newspapers or links to websites etc.
