Get To School

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

I am learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others, and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. HWB 2-16a

I know and can demonstrate how to travel safely. HWB 2-18a

1. Connecting the Learning - Ask the children how they get to school. For those who walk establish which, if any, crossings they use. Discuss maps and remind children that maps show the view from above. Explain that in this lesson we will be looking at maps of routes and planning how to make the routes safer.

2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes -

•    I can identify different types of road crossing and describe how they work.
•    I can plan a route to school and use a variety of crossings to make the route safer.

3. Active Learning -  In pairs or as individuals the children can use the whiteboard activity to explore routes and add crossings to the maps. As a class explore the map of the local area to discuss routes that the children take to school. Ask which types of crossings the children use and if they would make any changes to their routes. Extend the learning by conducting a local area investigation into routes around the school.

4. Demonstrating Understanding - Ask the children where they would put crossings and to give reasons for their choices. On copies of local area maps they could mark out their route to school, or a route given by the teacher, and mark areas with crossings or where they would put crossings.

5. Review and Recall – Ask children to identify how the different crossings keep us safe. Identify which ones they would put near to their school and why.
