Who Is Telling The Truth?

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

TCH 1-03a -As I extend and enhance my knowledge of features of various types of software, including those which help find, organise, manage and access information, I can apply what I learn in different situations.

TCH 1-03b - I can access, retrieve and use information from electronic sources to support, enrich or extend learning in different contexts.

SOC 1-15a - I understand that evidence varies in the extent to which it can be trusted and can use this in learning about current issues in society.

Lit 1-14a - Using what I know about the features of different types of texts, I can find, select, sort and use information for a specific purpose.

1.

Sharing the Learning Outcomes - • I can use a website search facility using key words.
• I can evaluate the website to see if it helps me
• I can explain that some information online is not to be trusted..

2. Active Learning – Ask children if they know anything about a tree octopus. On the computers ask the class to search the keywords “Pacific North West Tree Octopus” or direct them to the website - http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/ then find out 3 facts about the tree octopus. Give the children a selection of animal, reptile and sea creature books and ask again for 3 facts. The children will not be able to find out any information in the books. Ask the children why they think that is? Explain that the website is a hoax and none of the information on it is accurate. Ask what made them think the website is real? Reinforce the message that not all websites tell us the truth or give the correct information.

3. Demonstrating Understanding –  Use the online activity, ‘Who is telling the truth?’ As a follow up activity the teacher could invent a character, including details about their school, hobbies, favourite subject. Use a picture / avatar for the character and display along with the information. Ask the children what they think the person behind the avatar is like? Would you want to be their friend? Would you reply to them if they posted this on a chat room? Explain that the profile is a hoax and that the teacher made it up? What and who can you trust on the internet, what is real, how would you know? What questions could you ask? Who could help you decide if it is real?

4. Review and Recall – If you are researching a topic, how can you be sure that the information is true?
What information should you not put about yourself online?
Who should you accept as a friend online?
What could you do if something doesn’t seem right?
