Safety Equipment

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

I am learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. HWB 1-16a

Through discovery and imagination, I can develop and use problem-solving strategies to construct models. TCH 2-14a

1. Connecting the Learning - Ask the class to recall the previous activity on keeping safe in the home – What were the most common types of accidents? Who might be more at risk? Remind the class that they were asked to look for types of safety devices in their homes and they are going to make use of that information in this activity.

2. Sharing the Learning outcomes -

• I can give examples of safety devices or equipment that keeps us safe in the home.
• I can design a safety device for the home.

3. Active Learning - Show the class one or two examples of safety devices, like a bike helmet or an anti slip bath mat. Ask them to share the examples they found for their homework task – either by showing photos or just describing the item. (N.B. Remind pupils that some items of safety equipment, especially child resistant closures on medicine bottles and safety gates are not ‘child proof’ they may just delay the issue.)

Display the design briefs on the interactive whiteboard and set the class a challenge to design a new safety device for the home. The children can work in pairs, small groups or as individuals and can draw, write or make a model depending on time and resources available.

4. Demonstrating Understanding - Feedback time for the groups or individuals to demonstrate or describe their safety device (like an episode of ‘Dragons’ Den’) and for the rest of the class to ask questions or make constructive comments.

5. Review and Recall - Remind the class about the Learning Outcomes and ask the children to give a few quick examples of equipment or devices to keep toddlers safer, to prevent fires, to prevent trips and falls, to stop people getting electrocuted, etc.
