Run Yell Tell

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

I am learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. HWB 0-16a

This lesson could be delivered by the local Community Police Officer.

1. Connecting the Learning - Recall the lesson on safe and unsafe places and ask if the class can remember any examples. Explain that no matter where you are playing you also need to know what to do if approached by a stranger. A stranger is someone you don’t know. Most strangers are fine but a very small number want to hurt children and in this lesson we are going to look at what to do if a stranger approaches you.
2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes -

•    I can explain what to do if approached by a stranger – Run! Yell! Tell!
•    I can name people to tell if a stranger has approached me.
3. Active Learning - Explain to the class that some strangers might try to trick children into going away with them by-

• Saying they have lost a pet and want you to help them find it.
• Offering you sweets.
• Saying they know your parents.
• Asking you if you want a lift in their car

Never accept sweets from a stranger. Never get into a car with a stranger. Instead there are 3 easy to remember words to help you remember what to do if a stranger approaches you -

Run! (get away from the stranger as fast as you can.)
Yell! (Shouting ‘no!’ or ‘help!’ lets other people know you need help.)
Tell! (Tell a trusted person what has happened – someone in your family, a police officer, traffic warden, shopkeeper.)

Ask the class to practise saying ‘Run! Yell! Tell!’
4. Demonstrating Understanding - Using puppets or a picture book ask the class to help retell the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. In this version when the wolf talks to Little Red Riding Hood, she uses Run! Yell! Tell! to keep safe.
5. Review and Recall - Ask the children what to do if a stranger approaches them and ask them for examples of safe people to tell.
