Stop, Drop and Roll

I can show ways of getting help in unsafe situations and emergencies. HWB 0-42a.

1. Connecting the Learning - Remind the class about the previous lessons on Safe Syd at the Fire Station and calling 999. Explain that in this lesson they are going to learn what to do if their clothes accidentally caught fire. Reinforce that this is an extremely unlikely event but it is really important to know what to.
2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes -

• I can explain what to do if my clothes caught fire
• I can demonstrate the song and actions, Stop, Drop and Roll
3. Active Learning - Remind the class that if they follow the rules (not to play with matches and lighters and stay away from fires) then it is extremely unlikely that their clothes would catch fire.

If it did happen then everyone needs to know what to do.

Explain that fire gets bigger with more air – so if your clothes were on fire and you started running, that gives the fire more air and the flames would get bigger.

The best thing to do is STOP! Fire also wants to travel upwards, which would be towards your head.

The best thing to do is DROP to the ground.

Finally, the best way to put the fire out is to tuck your arms in and ROLL over lots of times.

Put those three things together and you have – STOP, DROP and ROLL!

Afterwards you should tell an adult what happened.

Use the interactive whiteboard to watch the ‘Stop, Drop and Roll’ song and actions being demonstrated.
4. Demonstrating Understanding - In a room with lots of floor space, divide the class into two and ask one half to demonstrate the ‘Stop, Drop and Roll’ technique, while the other half watch. (Ideally they could sing the song while doing the actions.) Ask the audience to check that the performers have remembered each step correctly and give constructive comments if needed. Then swap the two sides of the class and repeat.
5. Review and Recall – ‘What have we learned?’ What are the three important actions to take if your clothes catch fire? Can any of the children remember why each is important? Finally remind the children that clothes catching on fire is very unlikely to happen.
