Fire Escape Plan

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

I know and can demonstrate how to keep myself and others safe and how to respond in a range of emergency situations. HWB 2-17a.

1. Connecting the Learning - Ask the class if they would know what to do if the fire alarm went off in the school? Ask them if they know what they would do if they heard the smoke alarm going off in their house? Explain that they are going to make sure they know the correct steps to take to keep them safe.

2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes-

• I know what steps to take in the event of a fire
• I can explain to others how to keep safe in the event of a fire

3. Active Learning - Fire Escape Plan Quiz, (see teachers notes)- Place an A in one corner of the room a B in the other, C in the third corner and ‘don’t know’ in the last corner. Explain to pupils that they will be asked a series of questions and be given a choice of answers to choose from, they should select which answer they believe to be correct by standing in the corresponding corner of the room.

4. Demonstrating Understanding - Use the resource to play the ‘Fire Escape Plan’ activity. Children work in pairs or as individuals to select the correct order of actions they would take if they heard the smoke alarm going off at night and they were in their room.

5. Home Learning - Ask pupils to go to www.gosafescotland.co.uk and download a blank Fire Escape Plan. Pupils should complete the plan with their family and practice it.

6. Review and Recall - Remind the class about the Learning Outcomes and ask them to think of things they could do to make it easier for them to get out of the house safely in the event of a fire -

• Have a smoke alarm on every level of the house,
• Tell mum and dad to keep a phone in their room,
• Tidy away anything that could block your path to escape i.e. clothes on floor.
• Have a Fire Escape Plan for your house, make this with your family and discuss and practice what you would do.
