Hazards Near the Home

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

I am learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. HWB 0-16a

1. Connecting the Learning - Recall the previous lesson by showing the class the ‘Hazard House’ on the Smartboard. Tell the class that Goldilocks (from ‘The Three Bears’) has noticed the door is open and wants to explore the ‘Hazard House’. Ask a few children to advise Goldilocks what to avoid or watch out for. Explain that in this lesson Goldilocks (and the class) are going to try to spot and learn about possible hazards just outside the house – in the garden or driveway.

2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes-

• I can spot hazards near the home in the driveway or garden.
• I can explain how to avoid some of the hazards near the home.

3. Active Learning - Use the online activity to look at pictures of garden objects and ask the children to sort them into ‘safer’ or ‘unsafe’ categories. Ask the children why they think the car might be dangerous.  Highlight the dangers of playing in the driveway (i.e. danger of being run over) and of touching disc brakes on a car’s wheels (they heat up after the car has been running and can burn hands.)

4. Demonstrating Understanding - Ask the children to work in their groups to draw pictures of the hazards in the garden or driveway. Give each child a small piece of paper (about A5) and ask them to draw one of the hazards they remember from the garden or driveway picture. Scribe the title of their hazard if time allows. Choose a child and ask them to go and find another child who has drawn the same hazard. Repeat until the children all have at least one partner or small group who have chosen the same (or similar) hazard. Ask them to discuss how to avoid the danger or how to make it safer. Have a quick feedback time.

5. Review and Recall - With the children gathered so they can all see the interactive whiteboard activity again and revisit the pictures of ‘unsafe’ objects in the garden. Ask the children, ‘If Goldilocks came to play in this garden, what could you tell her to keep her safe?’
