Keeping myself safe

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

Assess and manage risk and protect myself and others from harm. HWB 2-17a..

1. Connecting the Learning - Show pictures on the smartboard of a voting card, a pack of cigarettes, a bike, a bottle of alcohol, a packet of crisps, a bottle of medicine, a video game, a magazine, a tennis set, nail polish, nail polish remover, a loaf of bread, a bunch of flowers, a bag of apples, a sharp knife, lottery tickets, can of deodorant. Look at the pictures and discuss what items you see in your family’s shopping trolley. What items would you be able to buy if you were sent to the shop alone?

2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes -

• I understand that certain products have an age restriction on them for my own safety.
• I know the consequences for being in possession of age restricted products .

3. Active Learning - As a class, each child chooses an item to drag into either ‘no limit’, ‘16’ or ‘18’ section. Why do the children think we have to be a certain age to buy things? Make sure the message that the reason there are restrictions are for our own safety as these products may be harmful to us is conveyed. Discuss how they may be harmful (With reference to deodorant, the following description is useful: When these products are used correctly, they are perfectly safe, but when ‘sniffed’ can be very harmful. ‘Sniffing’ is when everyday household products are breathed in on piurpose to get an effect or feeling from them. The website www.re-solve.org also has lots of educational material.

4. Demonstrating Understanding - Choose three items and with a partner discuss what would happen if you were caught with these in your possession. What might happen to the person that sold you them? What would you do if your friend asked you to buy something that you knew you were too young to do? Make a poster about one of the items, explaining why it is not safe for someone under the legal age to possess and what to do if someone offers it to you.

5. Review and Recall – Show correct answers on smartboard of age related sales. Are there any surprises? Discuss how the adult selling the items will be fined if selling to underage people.
