Keeping Safe at the Park

CfE Experiences and Outcomes

I am learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. HWB 0-16a

1. Connecting the Learning - Remind the class about the risk assessment activity in the previous lesson and about the types of hazards they found in the street. Explain that in this lesson they are going to think about any hazards there might be at the park.

2. Sharing the Learning Outcomes

• I can spot potential dangers in the park.
• I can explain how to avoid hazards in the park.

3.  Active Learning - Have a ‘quick think’ activity in pairs to make a list of all the ways that people use the park. (No more than 5 mins.)

Ask the pairs to feedback and make a big class list. Conclude that parks are very important for our health and enjoyment but, like anywhere, there can be hazards that we need to look out for.

Show the class the ‘park slideshow’ on the Go Safe website and ask, ‘What are the dangers here?’ ‘How could you avoid that hazard at the park?’

4.  Demonstrating Understanding - Play the ‘Park Safety Board Game’ on the Go safe website either as a class or in pairs. The children roll the dice and move round the board answering questions on park safety to advance.

5. Review and Recall - Review the learning outcomes by telling the class that an alien called Zuton has arrived from the planet Pluton and wants to visit the local park. Zuton doesn’t know anything about dangers on Earth so the children will have to guide him around. Prompt the children by saying, e.g. ‘Zuton is at the pond. What do you need to tell him?’ or ‘Now Zuton is running towards the swings, how can you help him?’
